Screen Time & Summer: Finding a Healthy Balance for Communication & Development

Updated: 4 days ago

Summer often brings a shift in routine. Longer days, more flexibility, and time at home can naturally lead to increased screen time for many families. And while screens can be helpful in certain moments, many parents find themselves wondering: “How much is too much?”

The goal isn’t to eliminate screens entirely. It’s about finding a balance that supports your child’s communication, development, and overall well-being, without adding guilt or pressure.

Why Screen Time Feels Different in the Summer

During the school year, children have structured schedules filled with learning, social interaction, and routines. In the summer, those built-in opportunities often decrease, which can lead to more passive screen use.

Screens tend to be one-way interactions. While children may be watching or listening, they’re not always practicing the back-and-forth communication, movement, or social engagement that supports development.

That doesn’t mean screens are harmful on their own, but it does highlight the importance of balancing them with real-life interaction.

What Matters More Than “How Much”

Instead of focusing only on screen time limits, it can be helpful to think about how screens are being used.

Consider:

  • Is your child watching alone or with someone?

  • Are there opportunities to talk about what they’re watching?

  • Is screen time replacing play, movement, or interaction?

Co-viewing and engaging with your child during screen time can turn it into a more interactive experience. Asking questions, commenting on what’s happening, or relating it to real-life situations can support language development.

Simple Ways to Create Balance

You don’t need a strict schedule to support healthy habits. Small, intentional shifts can make a big difference.

Prioritize connection before screens Start the day with play, conversation, or outdoor time before introducing screens.

Use screens with purpose Choose specific times for screen use, such as after meals or during quiet time, rather than having them on throughout the day.

Build in movement and play Balance screen time with activities like outdoor play, pretend play, or simple games that encourage interaction.

Create natural stopping points Let your child know when screen time will end (“one more episode” or “five more minutes”) to support smoother transitions.

Supporting Communication Beyond Screens

The most important skills for communication develop through interaction.

Talking during meals, playing together, reading books, and exploring outside all create opportunities for children to practice language, social skills, and problem-solving.

For children who may need extra support, speech therapy can help build communication skills, while occupational therapy can support attention, regulation, and engagement in everyday activities. These foundational skills make it easier for children to participate in both screen and non-screen experiences.

Letting Go of Guilt

It’s important to remember that screens are part of modern life, and using them doesn’t make you a bad parent. Summer is meant to feel flexible and enjoyable.

Rather than aiming for perfection, focus on balance. A mix of screen time, play, movement, and connection is what supports healthy development.

Finding What Works for Your Family

Every family’s routine will look different. What matters most is finding a rhythm that feels manageable and supportive for your child.

If you’re noticing that screen time is impacting your child’s communication, attention, or behaviour, you’re not alone, and support is available.
